70 years ago, Judy Fryd, whose daughter Felicity had a learning disability, kick-started a movement that became Mencap.

We want to celebrate all that has been achieved for and by people with a learning disability in the past 70 years and say #ThanksJudy!

Our vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included

Mencap Sport

Mencap Sport

Mencap Sport works with key stakeholders in sport and physical activity so people with a learning disability have the same opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity as everyone else

We work in partnership with a range of partners such as National Governing Bodies, County Sport Partnerships and other sporting organisations to develop opportunities at a grassroot level.

We predominantly focus on developing opportunities for Mencap groups and services to be active, and working with mainstream environments to be inclusive.

We also organise a programme of national championship events and support talented athletes to compete in international competitions.

Round the world challenge

Round the world challenge is a fun, physical activity challenge that turns hours of fun sports and activities into a round the world adventure. Hours of activities equals distance travelled, and participants will receive their very own round the world passport to record their progress.

Groups and individuals of any age and ability can take part, and activity can take place within a local group, or within the local community.

So far over 400 people have signed up to the round the world challenge from 7 Mencap groups, 5 Mencap services and 3 other organisations.

The challenge is currently running in East Kent, South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Merseyside, Tyne and Wear, Middlesbrough, and Oxford.

National Athletics Championship

Mencap Sport, with the support of volunteers, has hosted the National Athletics Championship for over 10 years. On average 130 athletes with a learning disability compete for personal bests and medals.

We have recently added a festival of athletics which is suitable for those who do not want to, or who are not able to compete in the formal championship.
