Jenna’s brush with global fame: ‘She’s got Down Syndrome – but can do anything’
Melanie Whelan August 12 2016
A Facebook post welcoming Jenna Rathgeber to the team at her sister’s Ballarat hair salon has gone viral, with would-be customers trying to book appointments from as far afield as New Orleans.
Ms Rathgeber, who has Down Syndrome, is pictured washing and straightening a client’s hair in the post, with a note saying how she is brimming over with determination and enthusiasm and will brighten anyone’s day, the Courier reports.
The post has amassed more than 39,000 likes and more than 9000 shares in a week.
People have been calling the salon from as far away as New Orleans and Ohio hoping to get their hair done by Ms Rathgeber, not realising that she works at a salon in the Ballarat suburb of Lake Gardens.
The reaction has humbled Ms Rathgeber’s sister, Nikita Morvell, who moved into the Sanctuary Hair and Beauty salon six weeks ago.
She needed a helping hand and Ms Rathgeber, her older sister, was happy to step up and help.
« The post was more for my friends and clients, I didn’t think it would go so far, » Ms Morvell said.
« I guess it’s to show Ballarat [that] Jen can do it. She’s got Down Syndrome – but she can do anything. »
