The Karachi Down Syndrome Program
Although the Karachi Down Syndrome Program was officially launched on World Down Syndrome Day 2014 (March, 21st 2014), its foundation was laid nearly eighteen years ago when a group of parents got together to set up the Karachi Down Syndrome Society (KDSS). Despite doing some great work at the time, including organizing seminars with international speakers and experts coming in, workshops, printing regular newsletters and establishing a helpline for parents, the response received from other parents and society in general was not too encouraging and the group disbanded in a few years.
In 2012, the same group joined by some new parents and family members of people with Down Syndrome agreed that the need for a platform of those affected by Down Syndrome was evident since the support and resources available to them locally was still very limited. Aiming to start off with a public awareness campaign highlighting the achievements of people with Down Syndrome living in Karachi, (despite all the odds they had faced and are currently dealing with) the Karachi Down Syndrome Program was launched in March 2014 with the goal to advocate the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome living in Karachi and to provide them with the opportunity to lead fulfilling lives.
