The father of a 45-year-old woman severely injured in Tuesday’s deadly knife attack at a care facility for people with disabilities has described his deep anger and anguish over the incident.

“We’ve experienced many tough times, but we adore our child regardless of whether she has disabilities or not,” said Nobuyuki Noguchi, 76, while looking at a photo of Takako Noguchi, his daughter who is unable to speak.

“It must have been especially tough for her since she can’t express her pain in words. I feel like my blood is boiling with anger,” said the father, who says he can understand her thoughts through her facial expressions and behavior.

“My daughter was narrowly saved, but I cannot help thinking about how the families of those who died feel,” he said. “Society, too, should share the blame for letting such an incident happen.”

He said he was awakened Tuesday morning at his home in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, by a call from an ambulance service employee who told him he needed to go to the hospital immediately. He hastily turned on the TV and saw the news of the incident at Tsukui Yamayuri En in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture.

He rushed to the hospital with his wife Teruko, 76, where they found their daughter in an intensive care unit.

“Why did it have to be her?” he said.

Although stabbed four times in the neck, she was conscious. The knife missed her vital arteries.

After feeling relief knowing that she had survived, the father said he was seized with anger and frustration upon seeing her wounds and watching her being given a blood transfusion and intravenous fluids.

Takako’s condition stabilized and she was transferred out of the ICU on Thursday.

Nobuyuki said he is happy to see her steady recovery, but has no appetite because he is still in shock over the incident.
