The Austin Centers for Exceptional Students
The ACES is a state certified, private, year round, special education school for kindergarten through twelfth grade special needs students. A comprehensive instructional program is offered for students with an emphasis on academic achievement and the development of effective social and behavioral skills. It has expanded to three state certified private special education schools in the greater Phoenix area; located in Peoria, Tempe, and Avondale. The ACES meets the unique needs of students referred by the Arizona public school districts and state placement agencies who require special education services outside the public school environment. It adheres to the procedures, conditions, and standards set forth by the Arizona Department of Education, Exceptional Student Services and functions as an extension of the districts that refer students to The ACES.
Step Ahead Intellectual Disabilities Program
The mission of the Step Ahead program is to provide K-12 students with Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities the opportunity to become motivated, responsible and independent citizens, by teaching each student in this therapeutic program the essential life and social skills to become vital participants in our society. The goal of the Step Ahead Program is to develop students who are critical thinkers, effective problem solvers, strong communicators, and creative individuals and who are capable of adult independence. Our students will use literacy strategies with writing and technology as common practices to contribute to and compete in a diverse society. Specialized supports and services are provided to students within The ACES classrooms including:
-Adapted classroom materials and individualized instructional strategies
-Therapeutic related services
-Communication enhancement and assistive technology
-Positive behavior supports
-Daily living skills training
-Social skills training
-Assessments and evaluations
-Collaboration with community agencies
-Community-based vocational opportunities
Instruction is tailored to the individual learner’s needs and goal. Transition and career education services are essential components through which the students learn to live meaningful and satisfying adult lives. The Step Ahead Program emphasizes social relationships, career development, job performance, independent living, and household management.
Career Express (Peoria campus only)
The Career Express program allows student to practice job skills in the community. Career Express students gain work experience and train in a variety of settings such as a nursing home, thrift and retail stores, animal shelter, food bank, local community park, and with Habitat for Humanity. These students also go on a variety of field trips to tour different work sites to help them increase an understanding of the different jobs that will be available for them when they enter the workforce.
